Booz Allen, 5 biggest banks, Detroit, WTO

How Dangerous is the ‘Security/Digital Complex’?

6-12-13

And there’s a lot of money to be made. Last February Booz Allen Hamilton announced two new contracts with Homeland Security, worth a total of $11 billion, for “program management, engineering, technology, business and financial management, and audit support services.”…

JPMorgan Chase has close ties to Booz and the Carlyle Group, with projects that include backing Carlyle’s 2012 acquisition of a Philadelphia refinery; help in finding a buyer for aerospace company Arinc (which was part of Booz); reviewing Virgin Media for a possible takeover bid; and handling the initial share offering for Carlyle itself….

“Metadata” is all the rage on Wall Street too. When “market makers” like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase capture a large chunk of the trades in a given area (the top five US banks control well over 90 percent of all derivatives trades, for example) that data gives them extraordinary economic power.

In a very real way, financial institutions are now data institutions – and the “too-big-to-fail” ones are grabbing all the power that comes with the hoarding of information….

We face, in Eisenhower’s words, a spiritual threat, that of Metadata as Ideology. We idealize this algorithmic methodology, even surrender our liberties to it, while overlooking the flawed human origin of the process itself. Speaking as a former designer of large information systems, I recognize that it’s a very useful analytical technique. But as an ideology it’s antithetical to a democratic society:…

The Security/Digital Complex takes our wealth and has the potential to invade and monitor virtually every aspect of our lives. In the end, that could make it even more powerful than its predecessor.

Booz Allen Hamilton’s corporate slogan is “Delivering results that endure.” Results that endure? That’s exactly what should worry us.  http://crooksandliars.com/richard-rj-eskow/how-dangerous-securitydigital-com

It’s not just a ‘leveraged buyout’ financed by other people’s money. It’s a hostile takeover of democratic zones. It’s the Looting of the American City.

Detroit’s hostile takeover is being mirrored in cities across the country. State legislatures are passing corporate-backed bills allowing Emergency Managers to replace democratically elected officials, and these “technocrats” are echoing Orr’s ideologically-motivated actions.

Hostile Takeover

And it’s not just a Republican game. The Democratic mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, cut a parking-meter deal with a private company that began letting the meters fall into disrepair after promptly quadrupling rates.

An audit later concluded that the company should have paid twice as much for the meter business as it did, but the people of Chicago can’t do anything about it. The money’s already changed hands. Today Chicagoans struggle with their parking meters, but the former mayor’s a prosperous man. And his successor Rahm Emanuel, handpicked by President Obama, is busy privatizing schools and other city functions.

Rahm Emanuel’s a prosperous man, too.

The ones who break a city are never the ones who suffer. They never pay for the damage. They’re first in line when the legally sanctioned looting begins.  And they’re always the first to endorse “bipartisan” or “technocratic” moves which send the middle class a message: Your way of life is over.

If their hostile takeover isn’t stopped, they’ll be right. A century from now the middle class will only be a distant memory. Future Americans will never know what it was like to have decent jobs with health insurance and a pension, or cities with affordable and efficient services.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rj-eskow/the-looting-of-detroit_b_3467682.html

WTO Stands For “We’re Taking Over”

6-5-13   Public Citizen, which has been doing excellent work on this issue, reports on three U.S. laws which were nullified by the World Trade Organization (WTO):  country-of-origin labels on meat, dolphin-safe labels on tuna, and the ban on sweet-flavored cigarettes designed to get kids addicted to the tobacco companies’ carcinogenic products. (What’s next:  Cherry-flavored crack?)

The WTO and the WTO “Appellate Body” — two bodies most Americans don’t even know exist — overruled these laws in a preemptory manner that would have outraged the Continental Congress.

We didn’t elect them. We can’t communicate with them. But they’ve issued three decrees which we must obey:

1) We are not to know where the meat we’re eating comes from.

2) We must accept the fact that we may unknowingly wind up eating the flesh of dolphins, arguably the most intelligent nonhuman species on the planet. And,

3) We must continue to allow the distribution of products designed to addict our children to a deadly and habit-forming substance.

How’s that for “controlling our own destiny”?

The next front.

The next stage of our war for economic independence is being determined in trade talks —  talks that are being conducted in deep secrecy by a president who once promised “the most transparent Administration in history.”

Laurel Sutherlin calls the Trans-Pacific Partnership “a worldwide corporate power grab of enormous proportions,” and that pretty accurately sums it up. (It’s hard to write about these deals without sounding hyperbolic, even if you’re only being descriptive.) As Sutherlin points out, the TPP “s among the largest and potentially most important ‘free trade’ agreements the world has ever seen …”

And yet, as Sutherlin notes, “one can hardly be blamed for not being familiar with it yet. The corporate cabal behind it … has done an exceptional job of maintaining an almost total lack of transparency as they literally design the future we will all inhabit.”

Although 600 corporate representatives have seen drafts of the agreement, access has been denied to even high-ranking members of Congress. Dave Johnson excerpts some provisions being considered in the secret talks, and they’re truly terrifying.

In fact, as Lori Wallach and Ben Beachy point out in a must-read editorial, the treaty’s provisions are so unpopular that the last negotiator felt it could only be concluded in secret. And now sovereignty-killing provisions are being considered for a trade agreement with member nations of the European Union.
