8-30-13  BAGHDAD: An Al-Qaeda front group claimed a wave of bombings across Baghdad in a statement on Friday, part of a surge in violence sparking worries of a return to all-out bloodshed.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant said the attacks carried out on Wednesday, when nationwide violence killed 75 people and wounded more than 200, were retribution for the executions this month of people convicted of terror-related offences.

The group, formerly based solely in Iraq, has since expanded its reach to neighbouring Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad has been embroiled in a 29-month conflict with rebels, of whom the Al-Qaeda group are a critical part.

“The new wave organised by the lions of the Sunni people… was a response to the crimes of the Safavid government with the executions of a group of Islamists from the Sunni people in Iraq,” said the statement posted on jihadist Internet forums.

It referred to Iraq’s central government using a pejorative for Shia Muslims, referencing the former Safavid empire that ruled what is now modern-day Iran.

On August 19, Iraq put 17 people to death, all but one of them on terrorism-related charges.  http://www.dawn.com/news/1039393/al-qaeda-group-claims-wave-of-baghdad-attacks

India to Pledge Gold for Loan?
New Delhi, 8-30-13      India got an IMF loan on January 18, 1991, and October 13, 1991, to the tune of $3.9 billion special drawing rights (SDRs).
India’s forex reserves had depleted to $1.2 billion in January 1991, and that too dried up by half by June of that year. This forex reserves could finance only three weeks of essential imports. India had to pledge 67 tonne of gold reserves to seek the IMF loan.    http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/will-india-pledge-gold-to-take-imf-loan-113083000117_1.html
67 tons of gold appears to be over 1.6 million ounces of gold.  So much for the theory that gold is not at base of the world financial system.       -r.

8-30-13    look to India where the ongoing collapse of the rupee has pushed gold demand into the upper limits. India’s monetary authorities have reacted to the situation by imposing import controls on the metal in an attempt to keep the populace from fleeing the rupee for gold. Egypt hopes for a ‘no strike’ scenario against Syria, urges caution
8-27-13   Cairo has been using high-level diplomatic channels to caution against a strike on Syria. “Our position against the atrocities committed by the Assad regime is firm but this is not to say we should encourage moves that might wreak havoc, especially if there is no guarantee that such strikes would remove the Assad regime.”
Cairo is concerned that strikes could accentuate tension thus leading to a new influx of Syrian refugees to Egypt, at a time of increasing public
dislike and mistrust towards them for their alleged participation in pro-Morsi marches.
Cairo is also apprehensive that an Islamist regime “probably be more radical than the one that has just exited power in Cairo” could come to power in Syria if Assad is removed.
Kadri Saiid, senior strategic affairs expert at the Al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies, says a military strike against Syria is the last thing Egypt needs. Even if it is not a war in the conventional sense, Saiid argues, it would still be destabilising for Syria and the entire region, Egypt included.
It would mean the Egyptian military, which is now heavily involved with state administration and battling Islamist militants in Sinai, would have an added worry, Saiid adds.
Egyptian officials agree, and add that a fresh war in the region would deal a serious blow to an already damaged tourism and investment climate in Egypt. “We are desperate for the economy to pick up,” says a government official.
Egypt would take part in diplomatic activities, including with its new-found diplomatic enemy, Turkey, officials say. The priority now is to prevent a war on Syria.     http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/80013.aspx

Iraq, another neighbour, says it opposes the use of its airspace or territory in any attack on Syria.    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/2/0/79998/World/0/TIMELINE-Events-since-suspected-toxic-Syrian-attac.aspx

8-25-13  The 400-ton consignment – mostly ammunition for shoulder-fired weapons and anti-aircraft machine guns – came into northern Syria via the Turkish province of Hatay in the past 24 hours, and was already being handed out, the sources added.
One rebel officer told Reuters the flow of arms bound for rebels had increased since opposition groups accused the government of launching deadly chemical weapons attacks in Damascus on Wednesday.
“Twenty trailers crossed from Turkey and are being distributed to arms depots for several brigades across the north,” said rebel official Mohammad Salam, who told Reuters he saw the weapons come over the border.
Syria’s conflict, pitting mostly Sunni Muslim insurgents against President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite sect follows an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam, has ignited sectarian tensions across the region.
Qatar and other Sunni-led Gulf states have backed the insurgents, while Shi’ite power Iran remains one of Assad’s main allies.  http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/2/0/79873/World/0/Large-arms-shipment-reaches-Syrian-rebels-Oppositi.aspx

8-2-13    “Forces of Jordan’s frontier guard yesterday evening (Thursday) seized large quantities of munitions and different types of drugs during an attempt to smuggle them into the kingdom,” the army said in a statement.
The statement, carried by the official Petra news agency, did not specify the number or types of weaponry seized, or the nationalities and number of smugglers.
Government weekly Al-Rai cited border guard chief Hussein Zoyud as saying “a group of men implicated in this arms smuggling attempt were arrested, and an inquiry is now under way”.
On June 6, Jordanian border guards again intercepted a large haul of weapons being smuggled in from Syria.  http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/2/0/78004/World/0/Jordan-foils-bid-to-smuggle-arms-from-Syria.aspx

RUSSIA IS MASSING TROOPS ON IRAN’S NORTHERN BORDER

4-10-2012    Russian Security Council head Viktor Ozerov said that Russian General Military Headquarters has prepared an action plan in the event of an attack on Iran.
Dmitry Rogozin, who recently was the Russian ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, warned against an attack on Iran.
“Iran is our neighbor,” Rogozin said. “If Iran is involved in any military action, it’s a direct threat to our security.” Rogozin now is the deputy Russian prime minister and is regarded as anti-Western. He oversees Russia’s defence sector.
Russian Defence Ministry sources say that the Russian military doesn’t believe that Israel has sufficient military assets to defeat Iranian defences and further believes that U.S. military action will be necessary.
The implication of preparing to move Russian troops not only is to protect its own vital regional interests but possibly to assist Iran in the event of such an attack. Sources add that a Russian military build-up in the region could result in the Russian military potentially engaging Israeli forces, U.S. forces, or both. Informed sources say that the Russians have warned of “unpredictable consequences” in the event Iran is attacked, with some Russians saying that the Russian military will take part in the possible war because it would threaten its vital interests in the region.

7-16-2012      Bassma Kodmani, one of the top leaders in the “Syrian National Council” — a foreign-based umbrella group for some opposition factions, including the extremist Muslim Brotherhood, which is widely touted by the establishment press and Western governments as the primary group representing the “people” of Syria. And Kodmani, who continues to loudly demand international military intervention to oust the Assad regime, has open links to the elite.
Consider, for example, that she was at this year’s Bilderberg conference in Chantilly, Virginia — a secret yearly meeting of the top global power brokers from media, finance, government, military, intelligence, business, and more, that has come under criticism from across the political spectrum. Kodmani was also at the 2008 Bilderberg conference, though she was listed as French then. Now, for reasons that are not entirely clear, her official affiliation is listed only as “international.”Before Bilderberg, Kodmani was a former official with the massive Ford Foundation, an organization that has also come under firefor its controversial efforts to remake the world. More recently, she was serving as the executive director of the “Arab Reform Initiative” for the powerful U.S.-based globalist outfit known as the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) — yet another controversial elite group    http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/12084-us-backed-syrian-opposition-linked-to-bilderberg-cfr-goldman-sachs-george-soros

Bassma Kodmani, a prominent voice of the Syrian National Council, resigned from the main political opposition body to President Bashar al-Assad, citing disappointment in the group’s failure to work together more than 17 months after the uprising began.
“I decided to leave the council because of a difference of views over how to move forward and because thought I could be more productive working on the outside,” Kodmani, a Paris-based academic turned revolutionary, said today in a telephone interview.  http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-08-28/anti-assad-figure-resigns-citing-syria-opposition-discord
